Forgiveness
More info
Forgiving can be hard—and it’s okay if you’re not ready. Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting, excusing, or trusting again right away. It’s a choice to move forward with more peace for you. You can forgive and still keep strong boundaries. You can also decide not to forgive right now.
Safety first: If there’s ongoing harm or you feel unsafe, focus on support and protection (trusted adult, counsellor, helpline). Forgiveness is not required in unsafe situations.
Detailed info
When you forgive you are not forgetting what happened but you are making a choice to move forward peacefully for yourself and for the other person. Try these steps:
- Name what happened and how it felt. “What happened hurt me. I felt _____.”
- Decide what you need now (time, space, a change, an apology, repair): “I need__to feel respected/safe.”
- When you are ready, tell the person what you are feeling, thinking and need: ” Forgive you for___, and I still need____.” or “I am not ready to forgive right now. I need time.”
- Practice letting go (for your own peace): “I am choosing not to carry this today. I can learn and move forward.”
- Keep your boundaries: Foregiveness does not equal full access or the same closeness as before. It is okay to limit contact. If you’re the one who did harm (self-forgiveness): “I made a mistake. I can make it right and do better next time.”
