“I” statement

More info

It’s easier for people to listen when you share your feelings and needs instead of blaming. An I-statement keeps the door open.

Detailed info

When you’re ready to speak, use this simple starter:

“I feel ___ when ___ because ___.

I´d like/would you be willing to/could we ___?”

Examples:

“I feel rushed when homework is due and dinner starts. Could I have 15 minutes to finish and then I’ll set the table?”

“I feel tense when people walk in without knocking. Can you knock and wait for ‘come in’ first?”

Also think about the tone of your voice – keep it steady and kind—it helps.
