Rumination

More info

Have you ever found yourself stuck thinking about a problem over and over withouth finding any answer? That is what is called “rumination.” It can make you feel powerless, upset, or even hopeless. If we have been going over the same thoughts for more than 2 minutes without any new ideas of solutions ,it is probably not helpful to continue to ruminate about it.

Detailed info

When you catch yourself going in circles with the same thoughts, try this.

1. Notice if you are ruminating – for example, thoughts like: “why I am like this?, ” “why is everything so hard,?” “why can’t I concentrate?”
2. Shift your focus – if you have been ruminating for more than 2 minutes without any ideas for a solution, try to divert your attention by:
-Moving to a different activity
-Talking to someone you trust
-Going for a short walk
-Using a grounding exercise (focus on sights, sounds, smells, or touch)
